Not a Great View from our Mountain!Another year, and another Regional Championships in the 'English Riviera'. The band was again competing in the First Section West of England Regional Championships on the 11th March 2012. The music chosen was ‘Mountain Views’ by Bertrand Moren, which on paper looked to be one of the easier test pieces technically that we have had to play in recent years. However, this nearly always means that the contest results throw up a few surprises! Preparations went well with our now not so new Musical Director Helen Kinder, and we also called on the vastly experienced Gareth Pritchard. Gareth took an excellent three hour rehearsal two weeks prior to the contest. This kept us on our toes and allowed Helen to step back and listen to the band from a different perspective. We were ascending this mountain confident that we could continue our recent form and push for a podium spot. You always hope for a mid-table draw, and we got our wish playing number eight, just after the interval. Coming off stage, the overall feeling was that we had put in a solid performance, not without error, but still something to be proud of. Having had promising comments from supporters and followers alike, we were very disappointed to not even make the top six. Tenth was our position - a disappointing result. The result aside, there were many positives to come out of the weekend. Not least that all of the players on the stage were our own regular members. The 'Bandies' out there know, having 'bums on seats' in rehearsal week-in week-out makes your hobby a lot more enjoyable. A final note to say thank you and good luck to our Tutti Cornet player Nick Burroughs with his new posting up North with the Army. In his relatively short time with the band, he has been a great servant, player and friend to all of us. All the best Nick. Next Stop: Weston-super-Mare!
