West of England Regional Finals - March 2013
The Band competed in the West of England Regional Finals on the 9th March 2013, and for the second time under the baton of our Musical Director Helen Kinder. ‘Brass Triumphant ‘ by Gareth Woods is a descriptive, lyrical work, with much for the listener and performer alike to enjoy, evoking great imagery as it flows through the four movements. Preparations had gone well on a piece not necessarily technically challenging, but musically testing nonetheless.
Drawn to play number 13 and last for the second time in three years, it was a long day to say the least! Members passed the time by listening to other bands, visiting trade stands, watching the rugby, playing cards and the odd rehearsal. Waiting in the wings with only 15 minutes left before we had to be on stage, our resident dance coach Bec Ayles led the band in a great warm-up exercise called “Rubber Chicken”. This involved shaking arms, legs, shouting and then doing your best impression of a chicken! This rallied the troops, got our minds focused and ensured we were all ready to go! Not to mention entertained a shocked member of Poole Borough Band who had briefly returned to the waiting room to collect something, to be faced with an entire band doing impressions of a chicken! I’d like to see CCTV footage from the Riviera Centre of that!
What a difference a year makes. 29 members of the band took to the stage at the Riviera Centre, Torquay. The same 29 players that are at rehearsals twice a week and the same 29 players that perform at every concert we do throughout the year. Despite a few clips in the first movement, the band grew with confidence and style throughout, with great ensemble playing and solo lines to match. By the last movement we were in full flow and we powered through to finish. So excited by our performance, our Musical Director launched her baton into the air with 3 bars to go, sending it rattling down the bell of an unsuspecting Bb Bass player! Despite the minor flying distraction, Band and MD alike kept their cool and according to 4barsrest.com, it was “a fine performance which could feature in the prizes. It was Classy”.
We had many complimentary comments from audience members, but sadly only came 7th. Still 3 places higher than last year, so onwards and upwards we will continue!
Finally, a big welcome to Neil Doherty and Thomas Ireland on solo cornet and principal Trombone respectively, who made their contest debuts with us at Torquay and a welcome back to Shaun Street on solo cornet – we missed you! We would also like to welcome Howard Ireland on 2nd Trombone. It's no coincidence he has the same surname as Thomas - the father and son duo complete our trombone section. Next stop, Weston-super-Mare…

With the regional finals over for another year, the band has now turned their attention to the upcoming own-choice contest in Weston-super-Mare in May 2013. Preparations are now well under-way with only a few weeks until the contest. In addition to the contest, the band are also planning to give a concert at the Trinity Church, Ringwood in May where we hope to play our chosen test piece for Weston-super-Mare along with some other entertaining programme pieces. Please check the website again soon for confirmation of this concert.
With a full complement of Hyde Band players, 2013 promises to be a very good year.
